There is no such thing as a dull day in Yukari-sensei’s class. Even passing back tests can cause quite a stir. Highs: A bite-sized Azumanga adventure
Lows: Far too short; requires familiarity for maximum enjoyment
Azumanga Daioh: The Very Short Movie is just what its name says: a very short movie. This brief little film was played as an opening feature before Sakura Wars: The Movie in order to promote the then upcoming Azumanga Daioh television series. The film is ultimately short on content but succeeds in being an enticing preview of one of the funniest anime comedies of all time.
The main problem with the movie is its length. It clocks in at just under six minutes, but that includes about a minute-and-a-half worth of credits. To the creators’ credit, they manage to cram a lot into six minutes, but it ends up feeling like an almost overwhelming onslaught of jokes. Most characters are only on screen for a few moments, but just about every second of the movie is humorous. Also, the short running time doesn’t leave much room for character development, so a lot of the humor is lost if the audience is not familiar with the students and their personalities. That’s not to say that the film isn’t funny, but much of the series’ charm is lost because of the frantic pace.
Fans of Azumanga Daioh will no doubt enjoy this short excursion through Yukari-sensei’s classroom, and this movie can serve as a nice introduction to the series. Nearly all of the material from the movie would later appear in the television series, so if you’ve seen the show, there isn’t much new material to enjoy. But, the film is still an enjoyable (and very short) Azumanga Daioh adventure.
