After the mysterious events with Tsukasa and Aura are over, Bear and Mimiru meet up in the game to participate in an event held in the Dungeon of Nankoflak. But it’s not the monsters or treasure that Mimiru is interested in; it’s the memories. She recounts the tale of one of her first experiences in The World and the extraordinary players she met within.

Highs: Action the series lacks; emotional story
Lows: Basically a filler episode
.hack//Another Story is a bonus episode of .hack//SIGN that was only released on DVD after the final airing of the series. As a standalone story, this one episode contains much of the same emotional themes as .hack//SIGN, but with more action than the entire series combined. Unfortunately, all this energy is spent in the creation of an episode that amounts to little more than a filler side story.
This OVA tells the simple story of some of the first players Mimiru encounters as a beginning player in The World, and conveys an incredible amount of emotion for the short time the story is told. Matching emotion with action, there are noteworthy fight scenes that the television series sorely lacked. This episode quickly creates sympathetic characters that viewers can identify with, whether they are gamers or not. The three girls at the center of the story are thereal stars of the episode, even with the appearances of Mimiru and Bear.
Like the other successors to .hack//SIGN, if it’s a continuation of the plot that you’re looking for, you won’t find it here. Tsukasa is barely mentioned, and Bear merely puts in a cameo appearance. This episode’s only intent in terms of the overall story seems to be to give a hint of a background to Mimiru, and it fails to continue the major plotline along whatsoever.
This OVA stands on its own as a self-contained story, but will probably only be meaningful to .hack//SIGN fans hungry to see their favorite characters once again.
.hack//Another Story is licensed in the U.S. by Funimation, and episodes may be viewed legally in the United States HERE.
