Left on an orphanage porch, Candice White (Candy for short) always longed for parents. She watched as all the other children were adopted and her friends were taken away from her. Eventually, she gets adopted, but a child to love was not what her foster parent wanted; rather, Candy is to become a playmate for her step-sister Eliza. However, Eliza has no intentions of being friends with a commoner, and together with her brother they have made it their job to make Candy as miserable as possible.

Highs: If you like it you can try to track down the television series
Lows: Nothing happens; animation dated; probably won’t find the television series
Take a one-hundred-and-fifteen-episode ’70s shoujo anime series, shave it down to twenty-six minutes and here’s the result. What’s left feels decidedly unfinished, as well as coming off as little more than a clone of Cinderella. Two evil step-siblings, evil step-mother, ball, a prince… really an uncanny resemblance.
Taking the anime just on its own merits, this is a nice, little story. There’s a quick introduction, minor conflict and resolution, but it really is just a small skirmish in a much bigger war. There are a lot of characters introduced in a short period of time, and while basically no character development takes place, you get a feeling for who the characters are since they’re so one-dimensional. In the end, though, this movie just feels too much like a setup for a much longer piece, which in this case makes perfect sense.
The animation was surprisingly dated for being done in 1992; whether this was done to keep costs down or to keep the same look and feel of the original series, I have no idea. In this day and age, I expect more quality from a movie. There is a total of only three songs and, while they’re all done well, there is nothing amazingly out of the ordinary to be heard. For what it’s worth, my favorite was the closing, which is a slower piece.
Some people will probably enjoy this anime, but more than anything it’ll just whet your appetite for the television series. Unfortunately, that may very well turn out to be a bad thing as the Candy Candy series has been mired in legal problems for quite some time and is almost impossible to find.
(Now, and for the foreseeable future, the complete series is available for download; see link at series page.)
