Highs: Adds some development to old characters
Lows: Too much of the same thing from the series; very predictable; unfocused characters from the main series get no new attention
Just to start off, I would like to say I was extremely disappointed with these OVAs; this coming from a die-hard Fushigi Yuugi fan. While I was watching them, I kept hoping things would get better as the episodes progressed, and yet still the disappointment remained.
On the complete bright side of things, it was just like the main series in some respects: good characters, lots of humor and great, new music. However, on the downside, it was just like the series in its flaws: so-called “major characters” still remain totally undeveloped and both OVA series manage to pull off the “I love you but I can’t love you” theme that bothered me in the television series.
Another large negative I noticed is that both OVA series have very promising plotlines but didn’t give enough time to fully develop them. Also, the ending seemed rushed in both series and left me very confused at times. I think things would have been better had these OVA been a whole new season of the show, just for clarity reasons. However, each episode was worth watching just to see the omake theater at the end; I haven’t laughed so hard in a good while.
If you loved the television series, these OVAs are worth a watch… but please don’t expect something as great as the original lest you be as disappointed as I was.
