Taro’s mother has just passed away; being young and alone, he sets forth to find his estranged grandfather. After a short trek he arrives at his grandfather’s mansion. Unfortunately for all involved, poor Taro is allergic to girls except for the one maid who captures his heart, Mariel.

Highs: Fan service; some nice gags; short episodes don’t drag

Lows: Fan service; unfinished; no character development

Well, let’s get this out of the way right now: yes, this is a version of the standard Tenchi Muyo! plot setting. So of course we have the lone male with lots of girls all trying to get him, and of course Taro rejects them at every twist and turn. If the fact that you’ve seen about a dozen similar shows doesn’t turn you off there is some entertainment to be had here. Another little note: this show is rife with shots of animated girls in various stages of undress, not hentai but definitely heavy on the ecchi, so if that disturbs you I wouldn’t go any further.

This series takes elements from so many other anime that it really leads to a weak feeling. For instance, our hero is a kindhearted, hapless guy who happens to be surrounded by gorgeous women, including one he truly loves (a black-haired, sword-wielding guard and an inventor of outrageous devices). With so much in similarities to other anime this show has a hard time defining itself; in fact, the biggest difference to others of its kind is the ample amount of toplessness. Putting aside the entire unbelievable premise of the show and looking at the actual content contained within, you find that the story isn’t too much of a coherent entity; rather, it’s just a collection of 14-minute adventures. While this leaves no real room for character development, the short episodes have no drag and flow well. They are also very fun.

The animation itself is nice, with lots of bright colors fitting for the show’s lighthearted nature. The character designs are sort of dull, however, as most of the females just wear maid uniforms of one variety or another. In fact, for the most part the hordes of female maids are all the same nameless person.

Think Di Gi Charat but with better production values and instead of annoying kawaii, light ecchi and you’re on the right path. All in all not a stellar or profound anime but a very light, fun one.

Highs: Very funny; lots of potential

Lows: Shallow characters; series just seems to end with no closure

It is hard to put a score on an anime like this one. On one hand, you have a lighthearted show full of fan service and hot anime babes that are always taking off their clothes. On the other hand, you have a show that is obviously poorly made and really lacks in the storyline, character development, and ends just as abruptly as it starts for no reason.

If you are looking for a deep plot or something that will get you thinking, look in another direction. To be totally honest, Hanaukyo Maid Tai offers very little more than fan service. While many people enjoy this type of anime and will want to pick it up, the majority of us will head elsewhere and try to find something with more value to it. When it comes to character development, there is none. In fact, after fifteen episodes of setting up a story, it just stops. Perhaps there could be some kind of story if this series were longer, but with short episodes and a short season, there isn’t much room for development between all of the fan service that was clearly top priority here.

Yes, there are many problems with the plot, but when it comes to the art and music, Hanaukyo Maid Tai really shines. The tunes are catchy and the art is simple and cute. The voice acting is decent, but nothing to get too excited over. Overall, the music and animation are great and fit the light-hearted-but-not-to-be-taken-too-seriously mood very well.

I cannot recommend this one to everyone, but if you have a taste for shounen anime and aren’t afraid to see a little nudity, Hanaukyo Maid Tai is worth your time.
