Highs: Huge cast of characters; Guu is too funny for words; original concept; wonderful music and voice acting

Lows: Events do not flow well; low-quality animation; ending leaves a lot to be desired; one dimensional characters

There are plenty of comedy anime out there, but there is nothing like Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu. It is so off-the-wall and original, and the concept is so simple yet clever, I don’t know if I have ever had so much fun watching anime. The creators of Excel Saga have done it again.

Like Excel Saga, Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu does not rely on plot or character development, but instead comedy. The hilarity comes from the huge cast of comical characters. Everybody has some quirk that makes him or her lovable. So what if there is no character development? So what it the plot is almost nonexistent? I didn’t miss it one bit. With all the laughing I was doing I didn’t have time to miss it. Never has an anime offered as many laughs per minute as this one. Did I mention casting perfection? No one else could have pulled off Guu the way Watanabe Naoko did.

This is one funny show, but I admit it has its share of problems. For one, the events just didn’t flow well at all. In fact, the whole pacing of the show felt unbalanced. The animation is also below average and varies greatly throughout the series, ranging anywhere from average to awful. Furthermore, the ending felt so rushed that I wondered if I was missing an episode. Even with an OVA in the works that will supposedly wrap things up, there is no excuse for an ending like that.

OK, so Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu is technically flawed, but who cares? The show doesn’t, and neither do I. The bottom line is if you want a good laugh and just watch something genuinely fun, here is your answer.
