Highs: Highs? We don’t need no stinkin’ highs!
Lows: May make you envious of blind and deaf people
True story: Knights of Ramune was one of my first anime when I was evolving from a casual viewer into an otaku. Looking back on this OVA series, I now realize that this was not the way to start out on the right foot.
The only quasi-bright spot in this horrible anime is the art. Being from a mid-’90s series, the art is on par… with a television series. A quick comparison reveals that Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is a year older, has better art. Still, the drawing and coloring is passable and will not cause you to go into seizures while watching any flashing scenes.
The rest of the series is just dirt poor. Characters and plot? With exception for Ramunes’ robotic lover, you have your usual band of idiots running around trying to save or destroy the galaxy for little or no reason. Perhaps this series was not trying to be mentally enriching at all, so the creators decided to throw in fan service. Now, I have no problem with ecchi scenes, but when the main characters are usually found not wearing any clothing, you know that the person who wrote this thought that it would be a redeeming value to some extent. Something that hurts the anime even more is that the characters that are usually naked look like balls of plastic carved with a spoon, and the women have ridiculously large breasts that would make most female porn stars envious. What about the action scenes? You would have more fun reading about the economic downturn of Japan during the 1990s. Mecha designs? They look like mundane chunks of metal and suffer from a severe lack of imagination. Music? Seiyuu cast? Entertainment? No luck finding anything of value in those categories with this anime.
Whether you are a new anime fan or a convention-hardened otaku, do not watch Knights of Ramune. With lots of ecchi and nothing else, this is a true waste of time. Watching this anime will only teach you one thing: softcore porn is like flat soda.
