The last descendant of the Miroku ninja clan, Mido Miko doesn’t have an easy life. Her family is in a blood feud with the ruthless Suzuka ninja clan, and they are fighting for control over the realm of the Shikima, evil demons with an insatiable sexual appetite. With no one else but her diminutive ninja servant Nin-Nin at her side, Miko can only rely on her own ninja training – the secret art of ninja sex craft – to fulfill her duties…

Maeda Toshio is infamous for three themes: horror, violence and sex. Of these aspects, La Blue Girl has most of the third. It’s not that the OVAs are free of horror and violence, but the pornographic content is what will remain memorable to most viewers.
If there is one thing that sets La Blue Girl apart from other anime in this genre, it’s originality. Rarely do you see so many weird and yet somehow fitting elements as in this “ninja meets demons” setting. From nymphomaniac werewolves to voyeuristic dwarves, from petting duels to ninja combat techniques like “pubic hair blast”, many creative ideas appear over the course of the OVA. The plot even manages to remain mildly interesting to someone who doesn’t watch it for the porn, mostly by including a few twists that go beyond the usual cliché.
Unfortunately, La Blue Girl hasn’t aged well in the last fifteen years. The art and animation flip-flop between acceptable and terrible, and the unnecessarily high amount of still shots drags the quality lower. The music is a poor excuse totally incapable of capturing even the elementary mood of the scenes, and only the voice acting (Yamaguchi Kappei as Nin-Nin is the highlight of the show) can make up for it to some extent. Of course, that cannot hide that the entire plot is nothing but an excuse for presenting as many pornographic scenes as possible.
Don’t get me wrong. For fans of H productions, La Blue Girl is probably a must-see. It’s hard to talk about “quality” when you’re talking about porn, but this is probably one of the best pornographic anime production. The plot, while a little single-minded, is not a stinker: Maeda Toshio’s creativity is good for at least a few laughs if nothing more, and the series even offers a little comic relief. La Blue Girl is definitely not for everybody, but if your expectations aren’t too high, you probably won’t be disappointed.
