Highs: Every bit as cute as the series; some closure to the story

Lows: No background explanation; very little happens

A follow-up special featuring a grown-up Saga, A Little Snow Fairy Sugar: Summer Special contains every ounce of the sweetness that infused the television series. Although this short special is tailored mostly to viewers of the series, there lies a story that almost anyone can enjoy, while returning fans will be happy to see some closure to the story of Saga and Sugar.

When the opening strains of Sugar Baby Love reach your ears, you know it’s time to return to a world full of magic, waffles and friendship. Adorable, sweet and sugary is once again the heart of this story. With the television cast reprising their roles, fans of the series will be delighted to see that this special has all of the same sparkle. They will also be rewarded with a returning character from the series, as well as a glimpse of a much older Saga, who is given the chance to voice the end of the story with a graceful finality.

New viewers, however, might be lost in the overall story; by itself, this special certainly makes sense, but jumping into the story at the middle of the television series with no background could leave them a little confused. But as this story is mostly fluff and very little is accomplished, there is no real harm done. While putting on a class play is not the most action-filled or complicated of storylines, these two episodes do an admirable job of keeping the simple story interesting.

With a slice-of-life feel even with the presence of fairies and magic, this anime will bring back memories of childhood for almost every viewer. Unless puppies and kitties make you scream and run away, A Little Snow Fairy Sugar: Summer Special is certain to be a delightful way to spend your time.
