During their childhood, Yuki, Kenji and Hiyori were very close. However, Hiyori was forced to move away one day, and it is not until years later when Yuki and Kenji are in high school that they meet their old companion. The only problem now is that Hiyori has become a ghost and still wants to have more fun with her childhood friends.

Highs: Very touching, nostalgic story

Lows: Characters need a bit of spice

With similarities to Welcome to Pia Carrot! 2 DX, Mizuiro 2003 is completely separate from the hentai anime from which it gets its name. This is a pleasant story about childhood friends that will probably put a smile on your face.

From the opening scene, we are given a look back on the childhood of three friends, two of whom are siblings. Fast forward to the present, and Yuki and Kenji are brother and sister who live without any parents. The introduction of Hiyori floods them with memories of their childhood friendship, and this will definitely unearth a few buried memories of your own childhood. A variety of memories ranging from remembering how things once were, what sports you once played and promises made long ago are just a few things touched on. I found myself pausing the series occasionally to bask in childhood memories that I could not believe I still remembered. I would imagine that adults who see this will definitely recall many memories of “the good ol’ days”.

I just wish that Mizuiro 2003‘s characters had some more pizzazz. While delving into Yuki, Kenji and Hiyori’s relationship and pasts sure is fun, there is a lack of that certain ability to keep me deeply interested. Side characters have almost no importance in the grand scheme of things and seem to only suck up precious seconds here and there. While all very caring characters, they do not possess any quirkiness or odd personal characteristics that would make them stand out from the crowd of stereotypes known as the nice guy/gal.

Despite mundane characters, Mizuiro 2003 is a warm story about old friends and recalling lost memories. Give this short OVA a try if you want to be reminded of what things were once like.
