Highs: Fast-paced fun; high energy

Lows: Background needed to fully enjoy; simple story

With wild, high-quality animation and a fast-paced story, this movie is an adventure in itself. Although the story is easy enough to understand, with no introduction to the characters or the story of One Piece, those new to the story will feel a bit lost. Nonetheless, One Piece: Clockwork Island Adventure is a fun, wacky movie that almost anyone can enjoy.

With a simple, self-contained plot, the second One Piece movie almost plays out like an extended episode of the series if not for the above average animation. The story is straightforward enough: find the ship and defeat the pirates. As such, this movie doesn’t require a lot of concentration or involvement from the viewer; the audience is merely along for the ride. The film never misses a beat as it plows through the story. Combined with the exaggerated expressions and over the top character designs, this movie (like the series) has a distinctive look and definite energy that will appeal to long-time fans and new viewers alike.

If this is your first visit to the world of One Piece, it may seem a bit crazy and more than a little confusing. The characters of Luffy, Nami, Zoro and the rest have strong personalities and detailed histories that are not explained in this short film. Even though the movie tells a separate side story that does not contribute to the plot of the series, it may be too jarring of an introduction to appreciate it completely.

This film, like the television series, has a contagious delight for telling tales of action and adventure. One Piece: Clockwork Island Adventure is sure to put a smile on your face.
