One lazy day while Luffy was fishing off the end of the Going Merry, a tug at his fishing line sent the ship speeding across the ocean. Convinced that there must be a tasty fish on the other end of the line, Luffy was disappointed to find only an inedible treasure chest. As Nami investigates its contents she suddenly notices the roar of falling water caused by a gaping hole in the middle of ocean. What adventure lies at the bottom of the ocean’s bellybutton?

Highs: Characteristic One Piece comedy and action; breather from series

Lows: Just a diversion

This end-of-the-year special has everything that One Piece fans love. While this story boils down to nothing more than a filler episode, One Piece Special: Adventure in the Ocean’s Navel is still an amusing and lively adventure.

A quick excursion like this movie is the perfect breather after the long story arcs that dominate the television series. Clocking in at fifty minutes or so, this is more of a two-part television episode than a full-blown movie; as such, the animation and effects are on par with the series. With the same theme of friendship, some patented ass-kicking from Luffy, Zoro and Sanji and a treasure to be found, this movie contains everything that makes the series great. Luffy’s antics this time around are funnier than usual as he proves yet again that he is not your typical pirate… and a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

Surprisingly, this anime does veer off from the normal course of a One Piece story. There is no Devil Fruit enhanced bad guy nor a huge battle at the end against overwhelming odds. This is a quieter, less important story, which in the end amounts to nothing more than a cute side trip from the series. Nothing in this special impacts the characters or the overall plot of One Piece, but then again, it’s not really meant to. This is merely a diversion, full of action and fury, but signifying nothing.

If you are already a dedicated One Piece viewer, be sure to catch this special to see your favorite pirate crew in action. Comedy, adventure and hijinks on the open sea are all in a day’s work for the Straw Hat Pirates.
