Photon: The Idiot Adventures

Genre: Comedy
Company: AIC/Photon Project
Format: 6 OVA
Dates: 11/21/1997 to 2/18/1999

On a primitive, sandy planet on the fringe of the galaxy lives a little boy named Photon Earth. His superhuman strength does not get in the way of his sensitivity, though; when not sleeping in his box, he tries to keep Aun, a girl he swore to protect, out of trouble. As hard as he might think this is, protecting her is a breeze compared to this new girl he found in a crashed spaceship. At least Aun did not have an intergalactic madman and his army of incompetent but buoyant henchmen after her. Photon will probably think twice before swearing to protect anyone else. Then again, thinking is not really his thing…

Highs: Light humor done right

Lows: Gets overly dramatic towards the end

It is very easy to enjoy Photon: The Idiot Adventures but much harder to understand why. This is the kind of wacky humor that takes things a cut above slapstick without requiring much thought to enjoy. It has a good mix of jokes, awkward situations and visual absurdity.

The characters are completely stereotypical, but in a way where they make fun of themselves openly like as in Excel Saga, with which Photon shares a screenwriter. But being much shorter, their immoderate traits do not have time to get old. The story that holds the fun together is surprisingly intricate and even becomes a problem near the end as you need to completely change your mood to appreciate the dramatic turn of events.

The artistic values of comedy-centered anime are not always relevant but need to reach minimum standards to not bring bad attention to itself. Photon is not eye candy but still goes far beyond those low standards with OVA-worthy animation and detailed backgrounds. A lot of effort is spent focusing on the female form, so prudery is another thing you must relinquish while watching this anime. Just remember that it is not done gratuitously but for the sake of comedy.

All six episodes are available on one disc, so there really is no reason not to give this anime a fair chance. Its humor might be too unrefined for many, but everyone has had days where they just felt like having a cheap laugh. Try to keep Photon handy for such an eventuality.
