Wolf’s Rain OVA

Genre: Action
Company: Bones
Format: 4 OVA
Dates: 1/23/2004 to 2/25/2004

“This planet has gone through countless cycles of destruction and regeneration and is reborn as Paradise, until now, and from now on as well…” said the owl. After the fall of Jagara, Paradise has yet to appear, but that hasn’t stopped the wolves from continuing their search for it. Yet, there’s still one more obstacle in the way of their goal: Darcia.

Highs: Provides more closure…

Lows: … but the ending isn’t any better

Do you remember those four consecutive recaps from Wolf’s Rain? Well, these four OVAs effectively cancel those out; better late than never, perhaps. But in this case, the Wolf’s Rain OVA just doesn’t deliver and shows that the people behind this incredibly promising anime just couldn’t properly handle it.

Oh, don’t get me wrong: the Wolf’s Rain OVA allows for more closure than what the ending of the television series provided. The original ending wasn’t bad by a long shot, but it just left too many key elements of the plot open, like the wolves’ search for Paradise. These OVAs could’ve fit in with Wolf’s Rain without a hitch; the animation is slightly improved, but everything else is left unchanged, which is good. One could claim that Bones should have left out the useless recap episodes and used these instead, and while I concur, I see it in a way that Spike from Cowboy Bebop best put it, “Hunger is the best spice”.

But the end of these OVAs will leave you hungry; in fact, you’ll want an entirely new meal as this one is rotten. I refuse to spoil it, but I feel that the ending cheated me and anyone else who stayed the course of the ride this anime provided. With such an anticlimactic ending, I had a hankering to watch Berserk just to see a more proper ending; now that’s bad.

Without spoiling it, there really isn’t much else to say. What was potentially the best anime of 2003 became bunk, and the Wolf’s Rain OVA doesn’t do anything to help that. In fact, they hurt the series on its ride to mediocrity by detouring to absurdity. If you want to see a good example of just how far a once-worthwhile anime can fall, Wolf’s Rain and this sequel fit the bill.
