Anime Academy

Not familiar with Koyasu Takehito? Let’s try and jog your memory. Think of an anime. OK, so maybe that’s a little too broad. Think of a shoujo anime from the last ten years. Now, try and remember if there was a bishounen in said anime *gasp*. Did that bishounen have a deep, yet enchanting, voice? If so, then he was probably voiced by Koyasu Takehito.

IRL bishounen?

IRL Bishounen?

Born in Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture on May 5th, 1967, Koyasu Takehito had no initial plans to become a seiyuu. If you had asked him what he wanted to be when he was a child, he would have told you “a baseball player”. Then, when he was in fifth grade, his father died suddenly. His father’s death affected him greatly over the years. He went right from being a good student to juvenile delinquency in junior high school.

However, not all bad things came from this period of his life. Takehito would often skip school to watch movies. One of the movies he saw was Galaxy Express 999, and was absolutely blown away by the voice acting. “Voice acting… there’s such a profession?” he asked himself. After that, his act started to clean up. As soon as he was done with high school he entered voice acting training.

Hail Il Pal... err, Takehito-sama!

Hail Il Pal… err, Takehito-sama!

Koyasu Takehito’s very first role in anime was François in the Three Musketeers. At only 22 years old, Koyasu landed his first big role as Gai Kuroki in Tenkuu Senki Shurato. From there, he would lend his voice in an incredible number of anime. Some even refer to him as the male Hayashibara Megumi. Since then, Takehito has landed very successful voice roles in other anime; you’re most likely to find him playing the cool-attitude bishounen. A few of his most well-known characters are Fujimiya Aya (Weiss Kreuz), Hotohori (Fushigi Yuugi) and Kiryuu Touga (Revolutionary Girl Utena).

Koyasu has maintained very good relationships with other seiyuu, as well. The most interesting of these friendships is with Midorikawa Hikaru; in three separate anime, Koyasu and Midorikawa play the most bitter of rivals. In Slayers, Takehito and Midorikawa provide the voices for Rezo and Zelgadis, respectively. In Gundam Wing and Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, the two duke it out as Zechs Marquise and Heero Yui. And finally, in Fushigi Yuugi, they play Hotohori and Tamahome. In reality, they’ve become good friends and have shared some interesting moments. The usually cool Koyasu Takehito says:

“Somehow, I just can’t be cool in front of Midorikawa-kun. Every time I’m with him, I end up showing how uncool I am.”

Taking a look at Koyasu Takehito, your first thought may be, “what’s with the hair?”. Hey, Koyasu takes great pride in his trademark sideburns. When asked once years ago about his sideburns, he replied: “I’ve never answered this in personal profiles or anything, but… it’s embarrassing, so I can’t say… but… in shoujo manga, the cool guy’s sideburns were always long.”

I suppose the man has to keep his image up as the stereotypical bishounen. Which brings up one of his most ironic roles of all, Excel Saga‘s Il Palazzo. It’s only fitting that the King of Stereotypical Bishounen just has to play the stereotypical bishounen.

Quite the resemblance, neh?

Quite the resemblance, neh?

Is there room for more Koyasu Takehito roles in the future? Most definitely. If not voice acting, then perhaps he will continue to think of ideas for anime. Takehito is credited with the original concept of Weiss Kreuz, and the character of Aya is modeled after him. Besides, as long as there’s a need for bishounen, there’s need for Koyasu Takehito.
