Ryuunosuke finds a small cat and convinces his father to allow him to keep it. After being chased by someone with an obvious grudge and ending in a car accident, the cat is killed. Looking to console his grieving son, Kyuusaku places the cat’s brain in an android that he’s been tinkering with for some time. The result is a beautiful woman with the IQ of a common housecat. Hilarity ensues.

I was literally jumping for joy when I finally got my hands on this one. All I knew about it was that Hayashibara Megumi (Amano Ai, Lime, Ranma girl-type, Lina Inverse, Urashima Haruka) and Hisakawa Aya (Skuld, Iria, Mano Yohko, Amara Su) were heavily billed. That’s all I needed to know. They are without a doubt the two best seiyuu in anime. ‘Nuff said.
What’s this? My smile seemed to diminish as each OVA passed by? Oh, there was the occasional chuckle, but for the most part the series is a sequence of super-emotive, semi-humorous parodies of your typical anime characters. Nuku Nuku is Lime in a cat suit (it was at this point I feared Hayashibara-sama was becoming typecast, that is until I saw Love Hina).
I came away with the impression that the creators were inspired by Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Natsume Kyuusaku even looks like Tylor. This brand of comedy works in their source material, not in this attempt.
Well, maybe my expectations were too high going in. I know many people who love Nuku Nuku. Maybe you will, too. If you’re like me, look elsewhere for your laughs. By the way, I hear there’s a new OVA series out that’s more of the same. Count me out.
