Realizing that they had a veritable cash cow on their hands, Broccoli wasted no time in pumping out Di Gi Charat specials and movies to keep fans running back to Gamers for more… more merchandise, that is. The result has been a resounding success from a purely economical sense since fans can’t get enough of the antics of Deijiko and crew.
The intrigue for me has extended no further than the original Di Gi Charat. That anime showed signs of the oxymoronic “orderly chaos”, which is a trick only a few anime outside of FLCL ever managed to pull off. Di Gi Charat: Christmas Special isn’t one of them.
And that’s the real problem with every one of these sequels; all the same elements that made the original a hit remain… except for atmosphere. If you run a picture through a copier, then copy the copy ad infinitum, each successive one will lose its integrity. And that’s what happened here. Oh sure, Puchiko is still the Queen of Kawaii, Deijiko is still an annoying, hyper narcissist and Gema is still a floating blob. However, they are just shells of their former selves. Even the usually dependable Hayashibara Megumi as Pyoko lowers herself to match the quality of the anime.
Di Gi Charat: Christmas Special introduces a few new side characters, so expect Broccoli to have sold several thousand extra plushies. Hey, somebody had to win out.
