Life seemingly couldn’t be better for Kei and Mizuho. After many months of jumping obstacles and dodging their peers, they are finally allowed to be together at last. The honeymoon has to be cut short, however, because Mizuho’s mother and sister think it’s all right for them to interfere in the young couple’s affairs… with a strong emphasis on “affair”! Will jealousy tear the two apart, or will they realize that their love is their saio sen jiko yo?

Highs: Some very funny moments; great music

Lows: Most characters play no significant role; new art style; overly ecchi

I really didn’t expect much from this one. I knew that with a total running time of around twenty minutes, there would be no deep plot or character development. I just hoped for some loose ends from the series to be tied, and to get one final taste of the show I love so much. Was that too much to hope for? Apparently it was. Onegai Teacher OVA is a huge letdown in just about every way possible.

The very first thing that I noticed is that the OVA uses a new art style. In my opinion this is a step down from the wonderful art in the series. Thankfully, all of the other technical aspects including music, voice acting and animation are right on par with the series. There are several hilarious scenes, too, and I found myself laughing out loud more than once.

But the thing that really hurt was how little content there actually is. It’s unfair to expect a profound plot, but even knowing this I was amazed by just how little of a plot there was. What really got to me, though, is how small of a role the side characters play. Herikawa and Morino, for example, were my favorite characters in the show. In the OVA, however, they are nothing more than props with quick guest appearances. Another step in the wrong direction was the addition of ridiculous amounts of fan service. Ultimately this short OVA relies on ecchi and comedy when it should be focusing more on plot and characters.

If you are a fan of Onegai Teacher, then you should see this. Remember, though; this is not so much an OVA as it is a bonus episode, so don’t expect too much.

Highs: Same comedy transplanted from the series unaltered

Lows: In the end, nothing happens

Onegai Teacher was a good anime. The last few episodes were great, in fact. I loved the whole teitai plot catalyst, and all the saio sen jiko yo were cute enough to not be annoying. The ending tied all the loose ends so tightly there couldn’t possibly be room for a sequel… or so I thought.

Perhaps the first thing fans will notice is the change in art style; there is a good bit of super deformity in this OVA, which is exactly a good bit more than in the series. It works, though, so I have no complaints. There’s also a lot more ecchi, which was tolerable until that uncomfortable love scene. You’ll know which one I’m talking about. Perhaps it’s just me, but I always felt a bit uneasy with Kei and Mizuho’s relationship, and the last thing I wanted to see was a small eighteen-year-old boy (and that’s what he is) doing the horizontal White man’s overbite with a tall, voluptuous and beautiful woman. Call me an old-fashioned romantic, but this scene gave me a case of the heebie-jeebies.

Still, some things managed to stay the same. I always get a chuckle from Mizuho’s embarrassment over her eccentric mother and sister. However, the other secondary characters (Kei’s classmates) make token but useless appearances. They just come and go so quickly. The lack of screen time for Herikawa and Morino was the same complaint I had about Onegai Teacher, and I’m disappointed that nothing was done about it.

The silver lining is that the atmosphere was transplanted from the series to this OVA untouched, so on a surface level it feels the same. So if you liked the atmosphere of the series, then you should like this anime. Just don’t go looking for any other similarities.
