Highs: Everyone from the game is here; well-choreographed fights

Lows: Everyone from the game is here; too many loose-ends left untied; imaginative story factor: zilch

This is the best video-game-turned-anime out there. Well, that really isn’t saying a whole lot, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers. After viewing such lame titles like Fatal Fury and Tekken, this one actually exceeded my expectations. Kinda.

When it becomes blatantly obvious that the existence of an anime is to capitalize monetarily from a popular video game, all artistic pretenses fly right out the window. How disappointing. Whoever wrote this script could have at least attempted to break from the mold and offered something special. Instead we see the usual formula here: all the characters from the game make an appearance. Why? The story revolves around Ryu, Ken, Guile, Chun-Li and Bison. Why attempt to squeeze in every fighter possible, only to demean the story by leaving so many subplots unfinished and unpolished?

Well, at least I enjoyed the fight scenes, especially the Chun-Li vs. Vega match (I think most guys can guess why ^_^). The art style and animation are just right for this type of anime. What the story lacked in substance it made up for with nice pacing. The fight scenes were dispersed evenly all throughout, and occurred at the right moments.

Maybe if I was ten or fifteen years younger I would have appreciated this one more. Alas, time hath cured my tastes like a fine wine. This anime is like watered-down beer.

Highs: Good fight scenes; good pacing

Lows: Shallow and predictable plot; gives nothing to non-Street Fighter fans

I am definitely not a fan of video games made into anime, but I am a fan of Street Fighter, and for that reason alone I decided to try to like this movie and enjoy watching some of my favorite video game characters duke it out in anime form… all the while crossing my fingers that it wouldn’t ruin the game for me. When it was over I had mixed feelings about it.

I was thrilled to see that all of my favorite characters were there, but again keep in mind this is coming from a Street Fighter fan. When I looked at it from another point of view, I realized that someone who is not a Street Fighter fan would find almost nothing enjoyable about this movie. While it may look good compared to Tekken and Fatal Fury, it’s still a below average anime. It is action packed, and the fights are well choreographed, but that is about the only thing that really stands out as good in my mind.

Street Fighter II isn’t terrible, but the plot is. I don’t know if it could have possibly been more predictable. This movie is terribly cheesy, too. I think that the top priority here was trying to give each character a little screen time to do his or her signature moves. In one scene Blanka and Zangief are duking it out in Las Vegas. It doesn’t have anything to do with the story, and these random fights seem to be the theme for this movie.

Don’t watch this if you are looking for a great action anime with a deep plot. Watch it if you are a Street Fighter fan. It’s a pretty entertaining movie, but not a particularly good one.
